Zone of the Enders - Anubis

Thumbnail image for DSCN1192.JPG One of my first game purchases in Japan. Today was my 2nd visit to Akihabara.It7s quite a distance to where I'm staying, takes about 2 hours. Main reason for going was just to see the sites. There really is a bewildering selection of games and shops in this district of Tokyo.

Every block is crammed with shops selling electronics games, models, comics, figurines everything a toy geek like myself loves.

Anyway onto the game...

This is a followup to Hideo Kojima's  Zone of the Enders; A game which blew me away upon release. Hideo is more known for his work on Metal Gear Solid and this robots and tech mecha makes a bit of a departure from MGS.

It's a full on mecha sim without the need for remembering boring command sequences like Armoured core. The music and visuals are as to be expected under Hideos direction. The robots and mecha are pleasing to the eye and move like liquid across the screen.

The soundtrack pumps up already surging adrenalin, my first thought when playing original Zone of the Enders was "who needs to go to clubs ? Just sit in and play this !"

This time the story is not as niave and standardised as the original title putting an adult in the driving seat of Jehuty - the fighting frame. The cut scenes between combat are excellently executed in Anime style animation and cockpit dialogues between combatants.

The action when it comes into play is satisfying, as is the story, though the "missions" themselves basically consist of "Go to A to find X" duly followed by "oh X is being defended by robot B, time to blast!" which can become a little monotonous. The dialogue and cut scenes fortunately give a little more flesh to these shoot em up forays.

Its quite difficult following the whole plot in Japanese tho achievable even if you have no language knowledge and a game FAQ.

Allover a good game for killing time (and robots) and at a good price, was only \2,000  (about 10 pounds)

★★★☆☆ (3/5)

UPDATE: I have played the english version of this game now also, unfortunately the voice over acting just does not fit with the anime context and mecha feel of the game,so sticking to the Japanese version for the time being.
