Akira
To think this book is almost responsible for me coming to Japan...
I'm a big fan of recycle shops and 2nd hand book shops in Japan.
Everywhere you go you will always find a 2nd hand bookshop like BookOff.
These
shops almost work like swapping grounds for avid Japanese readers. Old
hard sought after titles and even recently released books, manga, games
are available at half or less the original price. Frequently a reader
will get a manga, read it then return it to the shop they bought it
from gaining a little of the spent money back.
It's a great system.
In Matsudo's BookOff for 100yen (roughly 50p) each were originals of the epic collection that is Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira.
I had the translated versions back in UK and paid a hefty price for it (more than 100 pounds !)
But as you see, beautifully drawn, there is no thing like the real thing and at a bargain price too !
When
I 1st heard of Akira is wason a UK Channel 4 Documentary when I was
around 12, It prompted me to write to Channel 4 and ask where I could
get the film, then writing to the distribution company and recieved one
of the 1st translated copies of the video animation.
I was overawed, and think it was probably one of the many seeds planted in me to be fascinated about Japan.
At my current Japanese level I cant read them 100%, but one day I will !
