  もう一歩前へ - a step closer

Interesting sticker I saw in a local train station toilet urinal, one step closer - I read about a Korean cleaning lady recently who put a small sticker of a ladybird inside the urinal, which had marked improvements on the amount of "splashing" by toilet patrons, apparently it gives the male users "something to aim for".

  Criminal - げしゅにん だ!

I dunno who this guy is, but he's "wanted", whoever he is.

He's got a missing left digit indicating former (ie disgraced) lower gangland connections clearly outlined on the poster.

Thing is I haven't seen this poster anywhere other than Toei Shinjuku line or Hanzomon line ,since its limited to the subway I'm guessing he's a bum fiddler on crowded trains, added to my initial kanji misreadings, I interpreted him as a "chikan" - 痴漢 - meaning "pervert" as the sound "chi" (the latter part of his name) looks like 地.(see the poster and do the math...)

Funnily though the two kanji that make the words pervert in Japanese individual meanings are "foolish" and "sino" or "Chinese"...offensive no ?

Whoever he is, if YOU are travelling on shinjuku line, be on the look out for an ex yakuza Chinese pervert and turn him in so that regular fully digited Japanese men can hassle girls in short skirts...But seriously I wonder what a bedragled looking tierd guy like this could have done to have sparked so many wanted posters ?

  隣人13号 (りんじん13ご) - the neighbor no 13

rinjinn.jpg

I recently rented Yasuo Inoue's "rinjin 13go" aka "The neighbor no 13" from my local video store. I've always been a fan of Santa Inoue's "Tokyo Tribes" comics for their bleak shallowness and quirky stories so I was keen to see a film adaptation of one of his manga.

  竹の森 - Bamboo Forest

TS2B0082.JPGAt weekends if I'm not catching up on much needed sleep from an exhausting week, I do my best to get out into a bit of nature, be it as little as a local park.

Mostly any park worth its Japanese salt (or that should be soil) has a small bamboo forest, though the thing that always confuses me is they always seem to be 立入禁止 - ENTRY PROHIBITED !

If you go outwith city limits you'll find bamboo forests but they are usual dense thickets (almost impossible to enter) with a sign saying 危ない!マ虫 !  - Danger ! Poisonous Vipers ! which would make you not want to enter.

Today near Matsudo there was one park that allowed entry to its bamboo forest and I think I know why your not allowed into them....

  Mito National Park (Spring)

TS2B0029.JPG
Managed to get a long weekend break to Mito again recently.

Last time I had been it was very brief and most of the parks were closed but it was a beautiful May long weekender so we spent the whole 3 days getting round this immense park.

I'm sure the pictures speak volumes better than I could so Click the pic to the left and have a look.

The stone shrine particularly reminds me from the end scene from Star wars...

  Age brackets

thehorror.jpg

I turned 31 the other day and it didn't really bother me that much, I was 30 last year, no big deal, getting older, getting on...the usual niggles of not being young and hip weren't biting too hard, then today I was filling out a questionnaire on a website and I realised...I've fallen into a new age bracket, while they're just numbers, these definitions shout volumes...

  Music on the move

nitrotracker_lite.png

Everyone loves the Nintendo DS for its innovative game play and touchy feely family oriented games, but if the guys at Nintendo had thought of doing something like this, it would be a winner for all us budding on the move music composers.

Based on the old Amiga "Tracker" music making concept, the loading of wav samples and playing via an on screen keyboard, it seems the DS dual screens was almost designed for this purpose, the top screen showing "notation" arrangement and the touch screen for user controls and keyboard.

I'm off out to buy a CF/SD-Card so I can get this running on my DS ASAP.

CF/SD, DS, ASAP ? - I gotta cut down on my acronyms, they're raising my BP and TMTLA rate beyond EU health levels...

  Old vs New - 新しい対古い

A picture I took while passing through Shibuya the other day: If anything represents the contrast of old and new in Japans housing standards, or perhaps even the mix of old and new in Japan's culture, it's these two houses - A rickety corrugated iron roofed and wooden shack, next to a primo built home with private garage.

  Final Fantasy potion

Ts2b0411.jpg

I finally sampled some of the "Final Fantasy Potion" energy drink that has been released  promotion with Final Fantasy XII released recently. Having not yet tried the game, but drank the potion, I hope the game delivers something more other than a strong taste of perfume! Granted, after drinking I did make a "piyoom" sound and my MP's increased by 380.

  Biohazard - Deadly Silence

Thumbnail image for DSCN1001.JPG

I purchased Biohazard Deadly Silence today for the Gameboy DS. It's really nostalgic to play the Playstation original on such a convenient little device like the DS. The improved features on the original are touch screen knife fights, swiping the stylus across the screen to stab or slice approaching zombies - while this feature doesn't add anything startling to the games original its a nice touch that adds a bit of punctuation for old tired hands at Resident Evil like myself.

Thumbnail image for DSCN1002.JPG
A cute little Easter egg feature I discovered is you can "touch" Chris or Jill while they stand still. Of course the only response you will get from them is touching in those "not to be touched" areas, touch Chris's behind and he will "whoa" and jerk, touch Jill's breasts and she will shriek and hide herself.

  words of the week 3月10日

A strange selection this week, I got mixed up with the usage of the word "deployment" for servers and was using it in a "military" context, instead of "normal" context, the difference is "haibi" and "haifu"....

This seemed to cause great hilarity amongst my co-workers for some reason!?

追いつく  おいつく to overtake, to catch up (with) まだたくさん仕事が残っている、週末に追いつくは必要と思う。

There's still lots of left over work to do,I think some catch up this weekend is necessary.
手配  てはい arranged, searched (by police)

サーバーはも手配されたから、これから始めれる。

As the servers been arranaged, you can start from now.

奉仕  ほうし attendance, service(s)

あの日予定がないから必要であれば奉仕を申し出る。

I dont have plans that day so if necessary I can offer my services.

配備  はいび deploy, deployment

部隊の配備が完了しました!

The troops have been deployed !

成果  せいか results, fruits

何回やっても成果が上がらない。むかつく!

No matter how many times I try theres no result. That pisses me off.

  日本語能力試験 - JLPT

I found out today I passed my Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) level 3. It's a once a year test of Japanese language ability

While this seems like an achievement learning 2 new alphabets and 300 kanji characters, it really only means I can read doraemon : A comic aimed at children between the ages of 7 and 10 in Japan, but in keeping with tradition as is a JLPT passing requirements I have to lord over like an obnoxious prick anyone who has a lower level than myself and bear a burning resentful hatred for anyone a level above me.

  words of the week 2月17日

I'm going to start putting up the "most used" words of the week;

i.e. the words I've had to lookup more than once and can't remember clearly for study purposes and future reference.

The format is KANJI - READING - ENGLISH - SAMPLE SENTENCE (Japanese then English)

They may not be 100% correct, but helps get your point across.

配列  はいれつ arrangement, array (programming) この配列の3番目の変数を表示したい、でも表示すると数値の内容が化けちゃいます。

I want to display the third variable of this Array, but when I display it the variable's contents are distorted.
間欠  かんけつ intermittence, intermittent バグを再現をしようとしと思うってなか出来ない見たい、具体的に問題は何かが分からないですが間欠そうです。

I thought I would try to reproduce that bug, but I cant seem to.I don't know definitely what the problem is, seems to be intermittent.
不活化  ふかつか inactivity 今サーバーはメール送るはずですが不活化,困る!。

The server should be sending mail just now, but it's inactive, that's troubling.
判明  はんめい establishing, proving, identifying, confirming 先言ったの間欠なバグについて、問題の元を判明した。メモリーが足りないのせいみたい。

About the bug you just mentioned,I've identified the problem, looks like not enough memory is the fault.
良性  りょうせい benign 彼が癌があると思ってたでも医者さんが良性と言った。

He thought he had cancer, but the doctor said its benign

  nightclub graveyard

Ts2b0385.jpg

I Passed a graveyard 墓所 (はかしょ - hakajyo) ) on the way from work the other night. The whole public facing aspect of the place spelt "nightclub" even though it obviously wasn't.

As our area is under heavy "business location re-development" with lots of classy cafes, eateries and discothèques, I almost mistook it for a nightclub.

When I die I want to be rested in a neon light club styled tomb like these peeps.

  location free tv

locfree.jpg

I've been reading a lot recently about Sony's plans for "location free TV". Basically the jist is you will have your lightweight portable 12inch screen and be able to receive wireless high stream broadband media content delivered to the device all across the country you abide in, that means being able to watch episodes of Gundam while visiting your Auntie in Hokkaido or the simple joy of a quick bit of wireless news while in the toilet.

On portable media, recently Nokia have announced their contender into the world of "portable media devices", an all in one games playing, PDF displaying, movie viewing, music playing single unit. It's interesting to see a new emerging market from the popularity of the PSP's extra features - How many people do you know who say "I didn't get the PSP for games..." and go on to explain its the portable media aspect that hooks them.

About time too, we were promised devices like these 16 years ago in Mondo2000 and isn't it about time we have competitors to Apple's culture of bland consumerism ?

  えちコスプレ - dirty costume play

Isaw this rather glitzy alighted advert in my local town Matsudo on the way home the other night. It's a sex club offering コスプレ - cosplay (dressing up) sexual fantasies and intercourse all for the princely sum of 7,000 yen (that's roughly 35 pounds).

Pay your money and you have the choice of "Nurse", "Race Queen" (think the latex clad girls at car exhibitions), "Tour Guide" or "School girl" for an hour.

I always wonder who goes to these places and what kind of people work at them. The image of a 50 year old balding salaryman frolicking with a 38year old "school girl" brings tears to my eyes.

  家庭画報 - Kateigaho

I've long seen this magazine in Tower, HMV and other foreign selling bookstores in Japan, so I went the whole hog and picked up a few of their back issues.

It's billed as Japans International Arts & Culture magazine, while it does have some very culturally interesting articles, some of the arts features are definitely aimed at more feminine audiences - I just can't whip enthusiasm up for new ranges of Jewellery with traditional Japanese designs. Saying that it does feature some nice articles on general design, food and architecture.

I'm not sure I'm its target audience, seems aimed at the Rich Roppongi expatriate crowd, though it does have interest for common old Joes like myself.

Definitely one to subscribe to if I ever return back to blighty

blind lead the blind, deaf/mute extort the deaf/mute

Sometimes there are news stories you read where you say "Only in America", though there are definitely some you can say "Only in Japan"...In Kagawa prefecture two deaf and mute people have been arrested for trying to extort money from a 77 year old fellow deaf and mute woman

The original Japanese story can be found here

I wonder exactly how aggressive extorting would work in sign language ? and do Japanese have their own sign language !? Poor old lady.

  q-ax cinema in shibuya

qax.jpg

There's a new おしゃれ(stylish) looking cinema opening up in Shibuya at the end of this month named q-ax, while the name sounds stylish and is being touted as the cinema- connoisseurs choice of cinema, the exterior and location leave a lot to be desired, slap bang next to 109 building (the gyaru mecca of Tokyo), what initially looked to be developing into an elegant architectural dream is now looking like a dropped piece of chalk wrapped in tinfoil in the heart of Shibuya.

One redeeming quality is the 1st floor is dedicated to a cafe and bar space which seems eager to emulate European art house cinema cafe aesthetics and atmosphere, as well the schedules seem devoid of foreign film and seem focused on Japanese cinema.

I hope to attend shortly after the opening so more later.

  rule of rose

Title screen - wonky fonts Diana Amanda

I've been reading more about SCEJ's new release into the world of "survival horror": Rule of Rose. Not so much "survival" going on but more "horror". From what I can garner from reading the site the story revolves around the main character Jennifer's visit to an isolated house after boarding a bus, a mysterious girl called Rose and an all girls society.

I recommend visiting the site and downloading the PDF story book, printing and getting your fingers mucky with some glue and scissors.

The game itself looks to cover most Japanese otaku's fantasies with horror, ropey bondage looking monsters and pubescent girls, still it can be lauded for its change in artistic direction, the 1930's brown shaded palettes and the look n feel reeks HP Lovecraft. The character design looks fantastically sinister, especially "touched" Amanda - "she follows the rules better than the others, but is still a lower rank member of the group" and the lolita-esque malevolent Diana.

Its released in Japan next week (19th Jan), where I hope it makes a welcome edition to my collection. I will report more after purchase.

For almost the entire duration of my time living in Japan, 今年の6月に3年になります、光陰矢のごとしだね - 3 years this year in June, time flies ! I had to commute to and from work on the "Joban" train line. Running from Ueno in central Tokyo to small country towns in the North such as Mito and Torride. It's one of the busiest commuter lines leaving Tokyo region into Chiba; the less sophisticated suburban country sprawl adjoining Tokyo.
