  Living in Japan

You know you've been living in Japan too long when you start to seek self help books about the process itself.

When living in a new country one can be inundated with "guide" books giving eating, drinking and tourist recommendations but very little is available in terms of the psychological aspects of living in a new country, especially a country as alien to westerners as Japan. (Or even more alien to Scottish "cheuchters" like me)

I mistook this book for yet another guide book when browsing in Book1st in Shibuya foreign books section, nestled amongst the "Tokyo rough guide for nama gaijin" type books, I found a real gem, outlining the moving process, settlement, blending in, prolonged stays, coping strategies and usually uncovered in books of its ilk, returning and reverse culture shock.

Each stage of the Japan living process is discussed in detail and how its impact affects the self from a personable view; highly recommendable for those living in Japan or those perhaps more orientated for those assigned to companies in Japan.
