  Cruising the Anime City

Thumbnail image for DSCN0462.JPGPicked this up at Tower records recently, by the infamous uber-otaku-geek Patrick Macias, it's a real treat and geek porn at its best.

The book looks at and celebrates the whole spectrum of otaku (geek) culture from the staples of Anime and Games to the more obscure Moe* and Dojinshi* in the form of a guide and explanatory FAQ like format.

I would hazard a guess to say Macias has primarily aimed the book at the Otaku tourist, visiting Japan for the sole purpose of shopping.

Even though living in Japan and having been a frequent visitor to Akihabara this book provides plenty shop information, and found some good stores from it. Akihabara can be a quite bewilderign place for the first time visitor and this book would provide almost all you need to know about the "electric town".

Macias is real otaku at heart and has dug out some good facts and the book would provide fuel for many a fans dreams to come to Japan. Even with me living here I'm  "coo"-ing while reading with cries of "that looks awesome". I would imagine if I had read this book several years ago it would almost follow a plane ticket purchase....

(Sigh... ok I'm otaku too..I confess....><)

A good book, and can be followed up more on Macias' blog or pick up the book at amazon.

Note:

*moe - Sickly sweet Lolita influenced animation, figures, pornography, games, etc characterised by overly cute big eyed child like maid characters. (Yeah its disturbing, More info here)

*
dojinshi - Comics made by fans of manga drawn almost to as good a level ass the originals. Fan fiction produced almost semi professionally, frequently featuring character and genre mashups, ranging into the obscure and pornographic (Again, disturbing tho more info here)
