  360 Fan Reflow & X-Clamp fix

xbox_360_rrod.jpgAs soon as summer hits my Xbox 360 goes and overheats and I get the 3 Red Rings of Death (RROD) AGAIN !

This is about the 15th time I've had to open up my 360 since I got it in 2005.

My initial RROD happened in 2006 round about spring. It was still in warranty so I exchanged it. After getting the new model after much waiting the fan noise when playing was so loud I had to play games at really loud levels so I bought a Talismoon Whisper fan from Divineo China. It was time to open up the box. Before replacing the fan, I couldn't be bothered doing an X-clamp fix so I just towel tricked it to get rid of the RROD.

Thumbnail image for reflow.jpg(Unbelievably wrap the console in a towel with the Hard disk removed for 20-30 mins powered on then leave to cool for 40 mins, it's not recommended but it works)

With the new fan in place it did work fine for about a year but in 2007, again Summer time with temperatures of 34 degrees and up, it would RROD.

Again Summer 2008, same problem.

My 2nd console motherboard is of the Zephyr type; this is the last time opening this console; I've fitted air flow improving heat sinks on most of the chips and only towelled it once, I've X-clamped it, and modified the X-clamp numerous times, different bolts, different washers, the penny trick, different number of washers, etc.

RROD's just always seem to come as the weather gets hot regardless of location in my living room.

My experience tells me if you have a Zephyr or earlier model and your gonna x-clamp it it is a temporary fix. I've followed numerous tutorials, read multiple posts online but still had to open the 360 as soon as weather gets above 30 degrees, re-clean the CPU, GPU, overheat, cool, reflow circuits with heatgun, etc I've come to the conclusion these earlier models are just plain "flawed" no matter how many times you fix it, its gonna get the same problem.

In hindsight I wouldn't have opened the box voiding the warranty and got myself a upgrade again from M$. At the moment I can play for an hour before an E74 Graphic error, this is probably due to me monkeying the box so many times and the GPU has been damaged. The solution, looks like I will have to buy a new box, though this time not hack it and play by the rules.

If your in Japan and need X-clamp parts I recommend http://www.ainexstore.jp/ they carry arctic silver and fan replacements and good heatsinks. Though at the end of the day, I think only a Jasper or better thought out model will be the only real 100% reliable solution.

It's a pity as the 360 has a lot of potential but even as a hardcore enthusiast I'm begin to grudge replacing machines via warranty or self repairing repeatedly.
