  T Shirt Designs

tshirts.png

Recently saw Duncan Jones' film Moon and thought the Logo for Lunar Industries and Sarang Moon base was too sweet to be restricted to just the movie so designed up a similar logo and sent of for printing. 3000 yen and a damned good print too. On the right is a Fiesar logo from the famed wipeout series. Why there are no t-shirts of wipeout racing logos I do not understand. Think I might have to make all 12 racing teams !

  Tokyo Game Show 2009

Tokyo Game Show passed this weekend, as is tradition I had to attend, though beginning to find the shows lacklustre each year. This may be as I am maturing into an old oyaji and no longer as interested in games as much as I was in my youth, but...No,I still go ape for games.

This year as with others seemed to be showcasing very little that was "new" or those games that were "new" had already been announced at E3; which seems to now be the platform for announcing "exclusives" in the gaming world. Exclusively for industry insiders only, while we the unwashed general public wait for leaked video exclusives from guest listed journalists, shouldnt the game world be giving us a little bit of a surprise at these events ?

  Capcom VS SNK

DSCN1109.JPGRecently with bringing my old Dreamcast out of the closet (not that it was it was gay or anything) I've taken a real thirst for old 2D beat em ups like Street Fighter.

When I was a frequent user of the Dreamcast I hardly touched these types of games as I thought at the time:

"Ugh ! My God,they're in 2D!"

This was more my mistake than anything and a common mistake that we all make is "new is good".

  Cruising the Anime City

Thumbnail image for DSCN0462.JPGPicked this up at Tower records recently, by the infamous uber-otaku-geek Patrick Macias, it's a real treat and geek porn at its best.

The book looks at and celebrates the whole spectrum of otaku (geek) culture from the staples of Anime and Games to the more obscure Moe* and Dojinshi* in the form of a guide and explanatory FAQ like format.

I would hazard a guess to say Macias has primarily aimed the book at the Otaku tourist, visiting Japan for the sole purpose of shopping.

  絶対絶命都市 - Zettai Zetsumei Toshi

Ts2b0381.jpg

絶対絶命都市 - Zettai Zetsumei Toshi (Desperate City) was a game the premiered some years ago on the PS2, putting the player in the shoes of an earthquake survivor. Outwitting the hazards of an earthquake torn city, the lead character was also involved in revealing a cartel conspiracy. While the game presented a unique story and unique gameplay. i.e. it pre dated Ico with the idea of nurturing your game companions, their welfare was your welfare. Even though this was one of the first games to use the Hollywood disaster movie genre, the game never really delivered all you expected from it. Still it was a brave attempt.

Passing Akihabara last week I noticed a huge billboard for the next installment of this game, it looks graphically polished, with greater interaction between characters and more characters (the last game only saw a handful of survivors which lead to an unrealistic feel).

It will feel strange playing a game about earthquake survival in a country that lives with a daily threat of complete devastation, being situated in one of the most earthquake prone parts of the world.

I just hope I pick up some survival techniques from the game for not IF, but WHEN the "big one" comes.

  Biohazard - Deadly Silence

Thumbnail image for DSCN1001.JPG

I purchased Biohazard Deadly Silence today for the Gameboy DS. It's really nostalgic to play the Playstation original on such a convenient little device like the DS. The improved features on the original are touch screen knife fights, swiping the stylus across the screen to stab or slice approaching zombies - while this feature doesn't add anything startling to the games original its a nice touch that adds a bit of punctuation for old tired hands at Resident Evil like myself.

A cute little Easter egg feature I discovered is you can "touch" Chris or Jill while they stand still. Of course the only response you will get from them is touching in those "not to be touched" areas, touch Chris's behind and he will "whoa" and jerk, touch Jill's breasts and she will shriek and hide herself.

  rule of rose

Title screen - wonky fonts Diana Amanda

I've been reading more about SCEJ's new release into the world of "survival horror": Rule of Rose. Not so much "survival" going on but more "horror". From what I can garner from reading the site the story revolves around the main character Jennifer's visit to an isolated house after boarding a bus, a mysterious girl called Rose and an all girls society.

I recommend visiting the site and downloading the PDF story book, printing and getting your fingers mucky with some glue and scissors.

The game itself looks to cover most Japanese otaku's fantasies with horror, ropey bondage looking monsters and pubescent girls, still it can be lauded for its change in artistic direction, the 1930's brown shaded palettes and the look n feel reeks HP Lovecraft. The character design looks fantastically sinister, especially "touched" Amanda - "she follows the rules better than the others, but is still a lower rank member of the group" and the lolita-esque malevolent Diana.

Its released in Japan next week (19th Jan), where I hope it makes a welcome edition to my collection. I will report more after purchase.

Zone of the Enders - Anubis

Thumbnail image for DSCN1192.JPG One of my first game purchases in Japan. Today was my 2nd visit to Akihabara.It7s quite a distance to where I'm staying, takes about 2 hours. Main reason for going was just to see the sites. There really is a bewildering selection of games and shops in this district of Tokyo.

Every block is crammed with shops selling electronics games, models, comics, figurines everything a toy geek like myself loves.

Anyway onto the game...

  Project Zero 2 - 紅い蝶

DSCN1123.JPG
A great surprise today after shopping in Akihabara, Project Zero 2 has been finally released !

Know as Fatal Frame in the US, the first instalment had a brother and sister creeping through a very authentic haunted Japanese mansion with mysterious links to an ancient occult tradition.

Like the first episode the "weapon" is the trusty camera to capture the souls of the dead. This time the story centres around twins lost in a vanished village, the game play is very similar to the first though some of the camera angle glitches of the first game seem to have been fixed.

The true strength of the game lies in its audio, atmosphere and genuine "jump" tumbler moments which are frequent and well paced. Who'd have thought we could have games as scary as regular spooky cinema. The story is gripping and a real mystery that keeps you going, the only disappointment is there is a lot of backtracking across previously visited locations; even though the play area is lareg and extensive you can get the "yeah I'm running passed this part again to get back to X from Y". This aside for survival horror fans or gamers looking for a genuinely spooky experience I recommend it !
