  Laptop Lounge

2009_LaptopLoungeFlattened_10_web.jpg
Performed a live music set in Edinburgh from Tokyo via the interweb yesterday. Laptop Lounge is a regular event in Edinburgh encouraging laptop and bedroom producers to meet up and perform and exchange ideas, dance and check each others sounds.

Initially had thought of using Hobnox for the performance though seemed pretty limited for live streaming, so we opted for skype instead.

Had the video up and running audio was syncing nicely....Waved to the crowd and a huge cheer and buzz went around the club (or so I was told) Was the legendary Kovac about to make a rare appearance after his 6 years of semi retirement There were rumours he had been experimenting with a midi clarinet!?

Well, I had as ever prepared the music just for the performance, no rehashes or mixes, all new material as is my rule for live sets, unfortunately 15 minutes into the set...skype failed us and so did the laptop streaming my performance...ah c'est la vie maybe a little longer till the 90's revival.  =)

Click here for a recording of the "intended" set.

  Ez-Jungler

I've been listening to a lot of Drum n Bass this week, late 90's Bukem,E-z Rollers type stuff so had a little go doing my own breaks in Reason.

I still adhere to the "no one loop" or "no loop longer than 2 seconds" rule for my music, even though its very tempting with Reasons Rex tool and Recycle to just take a break and re arrange a little and et viola a "song".

Therefore according to my imposed "rules" here's 4 breaks, totally spliced and rearranged, a pitch bend in places with an TR808 congo and hihat percussion over the top.

Of course it has "Chords" also; 10 secs taster. Click here to play

  Desert Island Disks

In keeping with the current trend of "25 things about me", "25 favourite albums",etc that seem to be about on Facebook these days I was just thinking what would my "desert island disks" be ?

Desert_Island_Disks
(For those that don't know, an interesting radio show where guests picked they're favorite 8 pieces of music they would choose if stranded on a desert island.)

Originally, only 8 songs, but lets bend the rules a bit; In no order of preference here are my top 25 Desert Island Disks and why....

  SoundCloud

Image2.jpgI've started using Sound cloud this week

http://soundcloud.com/kovac

A bit like the twitter of music; allows artists to upload music and follow other artists.

The most surprising aspect is the sheer amount of uploads are allowed and no length restrictions. The streaming of audio is flawlessly jitter free and streams like a dream; allowing jumping to sections of mixes with ease.

Kind of brings back the "mix tape" aesthetic to the web. Great for following DJ friends and catching up on other fellow musicians projects.

  aaaaright

Been getting quite used to using Reason now instead of Cubase, its not too bad for just putting together quick ideas.

Here's my recent effort; only 20 or so seconds, just a brief taster

Not Great, but good enough.Click here to play

A friend is completing his degree in design at the moment and needed some music for an animation indent he was doing. Its been a while since I tickled the keys and twisted the dials but I managed to rustle up this generic breakbeat ditty. Have a listen and a look at the story boards.

  Ezpassover

Here's a new track I've been working on and off for the past week, just a sample, not much arrangement, but still worth a listen.

  Two very interesting documentaries

A guy at work directed me to these two documentaries by Nate Harrison

A history of the Amen Break - the breakbeat that spawned Jungle music

and a history of the TB303 bassline.

This guy should make more films like these, they're exceptionally well scripted for web films.

  Music on the move

nitrotracker_lite.png

Everyone loves the Nintendo DS for its innovative game play and touchy feely family oriented games, but if the guys at Nintendo had thought of doing something like this, it would be a winner for all us budding on the move music composers.

Based on the old Amiga "Tracker" music making concept, the loading of wav samples and playing via an on screen keyboard, it seems the DS dual screens was almost designed for this purpose, the top screen showing "notation" arrangement and the touch screen for user controls and keyboard.

I'm off out to buy a CF/SD-Card so I can get this running on my DS ASAP.

CF/SD, DS, ASAP ? - I gotta cut down on my acronyms, they're raising my BP and TMTLA rate beyond EU health levels...
